Quantum Decoherence of the Damped Harmonic Oscillator

چکیده
In the framework of the Lindblad theory for open quantum systems, we determine the degree of quantum decoherence of a harmonic oscillator interacting with a thermal bath. It is found that the system manifests a quantum de-coherence which is more and more significant in time. We also calculate the decoherence time and show that it has the same scale as the time after which thermal fluctuations become comparable with quantum fluctuations.

Dissipation and decoherence in a quantum oscillator
The time development of the reduced density matrix for a quantum oscillator damped by coupling it to an ohmic environment is calculated via an identity of the Debye-Waller form. Results obtained some years ago by Hakim and the author in the free-particle limit [1] are thus recovered. The evolution of a free particle in a prepared initial state is examined, and a previously published exchange [2...

We suggest that propagation of nonclassical light in lattices of optical waveguides can provide a laboratory tool to simulate quantum decoherence phenomena with high non-Markovian features. As examples, we study decoherence of optical Schrödinger cats in a lattice that mimics a dissipative quantum harmonic oscillator coupled to a quantum bath, showing fractional decoherence in the strong coupli...

For the generalized master equations derived by Karrlein and Grabert for the microscopic model of a damped harmonic oscillator, the conditions for purity of states are written, in particular for different initial conditions and different types of damping, including Ohmic, Drude and weak coupling cases, Agarwal and Weidlich-Haake models. It is shown that the states which remain pure are the sque...
متن کاملUncertainty, entropy and decoherence of the damped harmonic oscillator in the Lindblad theory of open quantum systems
In the framework of the Lindblad theory for open quantum systems, expressions for the density operator, von Neumann entropy and effective temperature of the damped harmonic oscillator are obtained. The entropy for a state characterized by a Wigner distribution function which is Gaussian in form is found to depend only on the variance of the distribution function. We give a series of inequalitie...
متن کاملCovariant Mappings for the Description of Measurement, Dissipation and Decoherence in Quantum Mechanics
The general formalism of quantum mechanics for the description of statistical experiments is briefly reviewed, introducing in particular position and momentum observables as POVM characterized by their covariance properties with respect to the isochronous Galilei group. Mappings describing state transformations both as a consequence of measurement and of dynamical evolution for a closed or open...
